What can I expect during a women’s health exam?
Your provider at Patel & Patel, M.D., Inc. does a thorough review of your personal and family medical history at the start of your women’s health exam. The practitioner reviews any health concerns you may have and takes note of any symptoms you’re having or concerns you want to discuss.
Depending on your age and symptoms, the doctors may recommend blood or urine tests, a Pap smear, a mammogram, or bone density testing. If you expressed concern about sexually transmitted diseases or have symptoms to suggest an infection, your provider may test you for STDs and offer treatment, if required.
The exam also includes a pelvic exam, during which your provider looks at your vagina, cervix, and some internal pelvic organs. You also undergo a clinical breast exam to check for any abnormalities in your breast tissue.
Women’s health exams that include a pelvic exam begin around age 21 and continue yearly until after menopause. While your particular concerns may change with time, the need for expert care does not.
